Invitation

Please join us for a five session seminar designed for Greek Study alumnae titled Magna Graecia: Greeks Bearing Gifts . . . into Greek and Roman Italy. Organized by Professor Ann Olga Koloski-Ostrow, and featuring guest lecturer Professor Steven Ostrow, MIT History Faculty, the seminar will culminate in a study tour of Greek colonies in southern Italy, and is designed to meet the growing need of our Leadership Corps to continue their interest and study of Greece.

Seminar Description

The seminar examines a substantial body of Roman literary works from the second century BCE to the second century CE (to be read in translation) to gain greater appreciation of the enduring contribution of the Greeks to the Roman literary and artistic traditions and to appreciate how the Romans built upon and transformed the Greek tradition.

Schedule

Seminars
Seminar sessions are scheduled to start on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 3:50 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. and, on the following Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.:

  1. (Wed) January 28, 2009 – Introduction (AOK-O)
  2. (Sat) February 28, 2009  – Roman History/Roman Archaeology (SEO.AOK-O)
  3. (Sat) March 28, 2009 – Roman Comedy and Tragedy (AOK-O)
  4. (Sat) May 2, 2009 – Vergil’s Aeneid and Petronius’ Satyricon (AOK-O)
  5. (Sat) May 16, 2009 – Pompeii and Life in the Shadow of Vesuvius (AOK-O)

Study Tour
The study tour will be led by Ann Koloski-Ostrow (Brandeis) and Steven Ostrow (MIT). It is scheduled tentatively for the first two weeks of August 2009, and will be based at the Villa Vergiliana atCumae, Italy (under the auspices of the Vergilian Society of America). Participants will explore Magna Graecia (Naples and the Greek colony of Paestrum in southern Italy) and several Roman sites inCampania (with special focus on Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Roman villa sites in the area).

Costs

The cost of the seminar is $500. To hold a place in the seminar and study tour, please complete the attached application form and send with a nonrefundable deposit of $100 made payable to the Newton Public Schools. Please write “Greek Studies/Magna Graecia” in the memo line of your check. Send form and check to Greek Studies c/o of Susan Linn, Grants Coordinator, Newton Public Schools, Grants Office, 100 Walnut Street, Newton, MA. 02460 Attention Sandi Mangan. We would appreciate it if you would send your $100. nonrefundable deposit as soon as possible. Final seminar payment of $400 is due December 1, 2008.

The approximate cost of the study tour is $2,500, including, all meals, lodging, ground transportation in Italy, and all site fees. Airfare is not included. PDPs will be awarded for the seminar and study tour.
